**210 ALGEBRA 1 (1 CREDIT)**

The Algebra 1 course develops basic skills in fundamental algebraic operations and problem solving. Topics include the study of real number operations, polynomials, inequalities, functions and relations, systems of open sentences in two variables, rational and irrational numbers, quadratic functions and equations.

**215 HONORS ALGEBRA 1 (1 CREDIT)**

This course is designed to give the talented mathematics student enriching experiences that will aid her in the preparation for advanced honors mathematics courses. The basic goals and objectives are the same as Algebra 1, although the course is more rigorous.

**224 9TH GRADE GEOMETRY (1 CREDIT)**

This course focuses on discovering geometric relationships through observation, developing powers of spatial visualization, and recognizing the role of logical reasoning in both mathematical and nonmathematical situations. Topics include parallel lines and planes, congruent triangles and their uses, similar polygons, right triangles and basic trigonometric function, circles, constructions, areas of plane figures, areas and volumes of solids, and coordinate geometry. Algebra skills will be integrated throughout the course. Several weeks at the end of the year will be devoted to the study of algebraic concepts including but not limited to polynomials, systems of equations, radical expressions, rational expressions, and quadratic functions. Proficiency in the use of a graphing calculator and other technology will be developed.

**225 GEOMETRY (1 CREDIT)**

This course focuses on discovering geometric relationships, developing powers of spatial visualization, applying abstract principles to real world examples and using inductive and deductive reasoning. Topics include lines, planes, triangles, quadrilaterals, similar polygons, right triangles and basic trigonometric functions, circles, constructions, transformations, areas of plane figures, surface areas and volumes of solids, and coordinate geometry. Throughout the course, algebra skills will be used extensively

**229 9TH GRADE HONORS GEOMETRY (1 CREDIT)**

This course is designed to give the talented mathematics student enriching experiences that will broaden her perspective and aid in the preparation for advanced honors courses. The basic goals and objectives are the same as those for geometry, but the course is limited to those students who are invited to participate due to the pace of instruction and rigor needed to solve challenging problems. Algebra skills will be integrated throughout the course. Several weeks at the end of the year will be devoted to the study of algebraic concepts including but not limited to polynomials, systems of equations, radial expressions, rational expressions, and quadratic and exponential functions. Proficiency in the use of the graphing calculator and other technology will be developed.

**230 HONORS GEOMETRY (1 CREDIT)**

This course is designed to give the talented mathematics student enriching experiences that will broaden her perspective and aid in the preparation for advanced honors courses. The basic goals and objectives are the same as those for geometry, but the course is limited to those students who are invited to participate. Algebra skills will be integrated throughout the course. Several weeks at the end of the year will be devoted to the introduction of trigonometry and review of algebraic concepts including but not limited to systems of equations, graphing quadratic equations, and solving quadratic, radical and rational equations.

**240 ALGEBRA 2 (1 CREDIT)**

Students taking this course are expected to have a strong foundation in the basic skills taught in the 1st year algebra course (210). This course expands on topics introduced in Algebra 1 such as functions and relations, matrices, graphs of linear and quadratic functions, probability, polynomials, and data analysis. Rational exponents, logarithms, complex numbers, conic sections and sequences and series are some of the new topics introduced and developed in the course. Students are expected to use graphing technology appropriately

**245 HONORS ALGEBRA 2 TRIG (1 CREDIT)**

This course is designed to prepare the above-average and talented mathematics student for more concentrated mathematics training, culminating in the study of Calculus in the senior year. In addition to a rigorous treatment of the usual topics from Algebra 2, the following topics from Trigonometry are included: identities and equations, arc functions, solutions of general triangles, graphs and transformations of graphs. The student will develop independence in solving non-routine and critical thinking problems. Emphasis is placed on understanding the structure and processes of mathematics to improve the student's thinking, problem-solving and communication skills.

**249 TRIG COLLEGE ALGEBRA (1 CREDIT)**

This course consists of topics from advanced algebra and trigonometry. Many concepts from the 2nd year algebra course are reviewed and new concepts are introduced and developed. Transformations of graphs and equations include work with polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions. Problems are solved using verbal, numerical, graphical and analytical approaches. **
Open to seniors and some juniors by recommendation of current math teacher.**

**250 PRECALCULUS (1 CREDIT)**

This course is designed for students with a facility for mathematical concepts and processes. It focuses on the application of algebra and trigonometry using analytical, graphical and numerical perspectives. Topics include the study of polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic and trigonometric functions and their graphs, as well as functional notation and interpretation of graphs. Special emphasis is given to problem solving, the appropriate use of technology, and skills that are needed for calculus. Matrices, sequences, parametric equations, polar coordinates, optimization, average rates of change, and an introduction to limits will be included.**Open to seniors and some juniors by recommendation of current math teacher.**

**253 STATISTICS (1 CREDIT)**

This full-year course introduces students to four broad conceptual themes: exploring data, sampling and experimentation, anticipating patterns, and statistical inference. Throughout the course students will develop statistical thinking skills, collect and use real data in individual and group projects, gain conceptual understanding of statistical procedure, and utilize technology to further enhance conceptual understanding. The course is open to seniors and satisfies the fourth year math credit. A TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator will be used frequently in this course.

**254 AP STATISTICS (1 CREDIT)**

The AP Statistics course introduces students to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data. Students are exposed to four broad conceptual themes: exploring data, sampling and experimentation, anticipating patterns, and statistical inference. Throughout the course students will develop statistical thinking skills, collect and use real data in individual and group projects, gain conceptual understanding of statistical procedure, and utilize technology to further enhance conceptual understanding. The course is open to seniors and may satisfy either a fourth year math credit or an elective credit. Consideration for the course requires at least a co-requisite of Trig/College Algebra or Pre-Calculus, as well as above-average grades in previous math courses. All students enrolled in the course are expected to sit for the AP Statistics exam in May.**

**255 HONORS PRE-CALCULUS (1 CREDIT)**

This course follows Honors Algebra 2/Trig. Some topics included and developed are listed in the pre-calculus course description. In addition, composition of the families of functions are introduced and techniques of data analysis are used to find functional relationships between variables. The course requires the use of analytical, graphical and numerical methods for solving a variety of real-world and non-routine problems. Students are expected to strengthen symbolic and verbal fluency, and to study both independently and collaboratively. This class provides a firm foundation for future course work in calculus or statistics.

**262 AP CALCULUS AB (1 CREDIT)**

This year-long course introduces students to the study of limits, derivatives, and integrals through discovery, practice, discussion, and technology. Students will be exposed to the material from graphical, numerical, and analytical perspectives and are expected to justify their reasoning through both written and verbal explanations. Application topics include, but are not limited to, optimization, rates of change, area, volume, and average value. Efficient use of technology is a major focus of the course, and a TI-83 or TI-89 is required. All students taking this course are expected to sit for the AP exam in May.**

**265 HONORS AP CALCULUS BC (1 CREDIT)**

This course includes the study of differential and integral calculus. Topics are consistent with those recommended by the College Board for an Advanced Placement Calculus Course. All students are expected to sit for the AP Exam in May.**
