Habitat for Humanity
Students band together to help families find permanent housing

St. Agnes Academy's student-run chapter of Habitat for Humanity is hard at work building the school's first-ever home in Rosenberg to be owned by a family in need of affordable housing.

"I think seeing the house go up really gives everyone a great sense of accomplishment, but to also work with the homeowner adds a new element. It's no longer about being proud of learning to (use a) hammer well; it's about knowing the family has a place to call home and (that they) will get to move in with their belongings in just a few weeks," said Senior Katie Rose, who spearheaded formation of the club with other Academy students.

Three years ago, club members began raising more than $60,000 through campus movie nights, school lock-ins and other fundraisers to finance construction costs because they felt passionate about Habitat, a Christian-based international non-profit organization aimed at getting deserving families into permanent affordable housing.

"Serving others is my favorite pastime, so Habitat has combined that with my interest in architecture and an interest in building. Two passions of mine became one amazing, enriching, and just plain fun project," said Senior Olivia Sison, an officer and charter member of the club.

Since Feb. 28 through mid-May, St. Agnes club members will be on site every weekend to continue construction of the home they financed. All students are welcome to volunteer, as well as families of students, alumnae and others. They plan to turn the keys over to the new homeowners May 16.

"I think most people that get involved (in our build) really find something that they can be proud of because they know they have literally touched someone else's life, and that feeling is unbelievable to people of every age," Rose said. "It's really important for young people, especially young girls from places like St. Agnes where many don't really see quite as much hardship, to work for organizations like this because it opens their eyes to a new world."

"I have been impressed with the SAA Habitat club officers and members since I started working with them last year. The club members have done all the work themselves. These girls had a vision and now they are looking at a completion date prior to (for many of the members) their own graduation from St Agnes," said club adviser and Director of Finance and Facilities Leon Howard.
