  Diversity Week
January 25-29, 2010

St. Agnes Academy students were "Waging Peace" and honoring cultures and people from around the world as part of the school's 2010 Diversity Week. The annual week-long celebration showcased various customs, faiths and issues around the globe, and focused on promoting nonviolence. P.K. McCary, a notable author and peacemaker, provided the keynote address for the week's festivities.

The Annual International Food Festival fed more than 800 students, faculty and staff with dishes from around the globe. St. Agnes families brought home-cooked food samples relative to their home country or heritage to share with the community. On Friday, students dressed in clothing particular to their cultural background and participated in the Annual Ancestral Dress Day Pageant & International Performances. Students sang, danced and provided entertainment pertinent to their heritage in an assembly immediately following the food festival. Capoerita, a dance troupe from the Brazilian Arts Council, also performed.

Throughout the week, students heard morning prayer in various languages and listened to international music. Diversity Week is organized by the student-run Diversity Club and the faculty-managed partner committee, the Solidarity Committee. Both groups are focused on empowering students to embrace diversity and champion the marginalized in our multi-cultural society.

If you have questions, please contact SAA teacher Tricia McFarlin, who sponsors the club and chairs the committee.
