 2009 Season

Softball: Tigers triumph for sixth trophy
By L. SCOTT HAINLINE

 http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/hs/soft/6441627.html

There was no commercial endorsement or film crew in place, and even if St. Agnes didnt win a state championship, senior Lauren Kattchee was going to DisneyWorld, but taking a TAPPS Class 5A title along for the ride made it even more fun.

Kattchee and her Lady Tiger teammates defeated Fort Worth Nolan 3-0 in last weeks rain-delayed TAPPS 5A finals in Belton for the schools sixth crown since 1994, and first since 2006.

Since winning the first championship 16 years ago, St. Agnes has made
14 state tournament appearances missing out only in 1997 and 2002.
Along with the six championships, that stretch includes five trips to the finals, and three to the semifinals, and all have come under the direction of coach Lynn Kercheval.

It felt amazing to win state, said Kattchee, who will pitch for Brown University next season. The entire team worked very hard to get there, and everybody put something into winning the title. It was just awesome because everyone contributed in their own way.

Awesome is one way to describe Kattchees postseason performance in the circle.

She struck out 15 Nolan batters while allowing no runs, three hits and no walks.

Kattchee gave up only two runs with 33 whiffs and zero walks during the playoff run that also included a state semifinals 11-0 pounding of co-district member St. Pius X, and victories over San Antonio Antonian 5-2, and Dallas Bishop Lynch 11-1.

Bishop Lynch downed St. Agnes in the 2007 state finals, and the Lady Tigers dropped a 1-0 decision to co-district member Beaumont Kelly last season.

After we lost out on a district title to Kelly, we started to turn it around in a (5-0) playoff warmup win against Fort Bend Baptist, Kattchee said. We came out really focused in that one, and thats the way we played the rest of the season.

Kelly was edged by Nolan 1-0 in 10 innings in the other 5A semifinal.

Fellow St. Agnes senior Sandi Moynihan (catcher) has signed to play for George Washington University, and senior infielder Lindsay Price is bound for LSU.

The Lady Tigers also graduate Kathryn Nowak, Molly Jenner, Laura Colley, Brittanie Polask, Kayla McEnery and Tina Bennett.

After coming very close to winning state the last two years, it was very special for this senior class to get it done this season, Kattchee said. Its something well always remember and hold on to because it was a team effort.

Kercheval is St. Agnes athletic director and has also led the Tigers to numerous volleyball state titles.
