Junior wins first-ever alumnae essay contest

The St. Agnes Academy Alumnae Association sponsored an essay-writing contest in the spring for underclass students. In 250 words or less, participants were asked to answer the following question,

"As a future St. Agnes alumna, please explain what you have learned so far from your Academy education and how this experience is preparing you for success in life."

Junior Amanda Yam is this year's winner and received a scholarship award. Here is her winning entry:

"St. Agnes, we are loyal to you." is the first line of the warrior cry in which the Veritas women proclaim their loyalty to the truth. And, although sometimes we forget its profound meaning, I believe that we can never fully detach ourselves from its message because we are a part of its legacy.

With the promise of college preparation, the school also inevitably prepares us for life. With the overwhelming workload, constant bombardment of tests and pressures to be the best, the school has taught me the value of hard work. And although the results may not always reflect the hard work, I have learned that the perseverance and progress is just as important. It has taught me the value of responsibility; it is only when we seize responsibility will we have a chance at reward. It has educated me on being open to others, to embrace the community, and to not subside to social injustices or prejudice. It has offered education to the fullest extent from which we can become well-informed people who can then turn such teachings into actions.

My experience at St. Agnes has been a profound one. I have learned many values that will help me become successful. It has taught me to be a hard worker, competitive, and knowledgeable, without forgetting to be understanding, virtuous, and responsible. The school offers the balance between the two ends of the spectrum and the tools to become successful without forgetting the responsibility that comes along with it.
