The St. Agnes Academy Math Department is definitely pro-technology. We regularly use graphing calculators and
laptops to enhance learning in the classroom. However, we believe that our students should have basic math skills,
including but not limited to adding and subtracting whole numbers, multiplication tables, and operations with fractions.
Ninth graders enrolled in Algebra 1 (210) will take a proficiency test over these topics during the first week
of school. Students will not be allowed to use a calculator for the proficiency test. Throughout the year, the
Algebra 1 teachers will administer tests that include both calculator and non-calculator sections. Our hope is
these skills will remain with our students for their stay at St. Agnes Academy and in the future.
We want our ninth graders to have a successful four years in mathematics and their experience to be positive as
well. Knowing basic skills and performing simple operations without a calculator will help make a more confident
problem solver. Below is a list of topics to review over the summer. Some suggestions for how one might review
are also included.
