We begin this new year with a renewed sense of purpose and hope for 2009, as we learn and grow together spiritually and academically. On behalf of the faculty and staff here at St. Agnes, many thanks to our generous parent community for your ongoing support of our school and the people who work with your daughters each day. Your generosity at Christmas is appreciated in so many ways and we look forward to partnering with you in this new year to sustain our mission. I look forward to seeing you on campus this spring and wish everyone a blessed and very happy new year. - Sr. Jane Meyer, O.P., Head of School

Speakers needed for SAA Diversity Week Calling all storytellers! For Diversity Week 2009, St. Agnes Academy is focusing on something that has made this country so great --- our ancestors' journeys here from other lands and the cultural richness they brought with them. The SAA Solidarity Committee and the Diversity Club are looking for students, alumnae, parents, faculty, staff, and anyone else interested, who would like to share their personal experience immigrating to the United States. Speakers would be asked to tell their story and engage in dialogue regarding the immigration process with groups of approximately 30 students for 45 minutes. Each speaker would also be asked to be available for two sessions. Solidarity Day is on Thursday, Feb. 5 and storytellers are needed in the morning. For more information, or to sign up as a speaker, please email garvin.gaston@st-agnes.org, or call her at 713-219-5502.

COUNSELORS' CORNER
Attention all Sophomore Parents! Sophomore Parents' Information Night is this coming Tuesday, Jan. 13 We are pleased to welcome Lee Winderman, PhD. as our guest speaker. He is an experienced family and child therapist and his work with adolescents is well regarded in Houston. He will be talking about the challenges of parenting your sophomore --- adolescent development, managing conflict, and communication. In addition, we will briefly cover what to expect from the upcoming sophomore conferences and other important dates for the spring. Please join us at 6:30 p.m. (please note the new earlier time) Tuesday, Jan. 13 in St. Agnes' Strake Family Cafeteria. Light refreshments will be served.
Semester failing grades If your daughter fails the first semester of a year-long course, it may be possible for her to pass the year with improvement in the spring. See "Course Credit" in the handbook. Interventions could help her improve: accessing NetView to confirm that she is completing work on time, adjusting her study space, or tutoring might be prescribed. Her counselor will be glad to assist you with these decisions. Students with two or more failing grades will be placed on academic probation, and her counselor will suggest a plan for improvement. See "Academic Probation" in the handbook. As you work with your daughter, it is important to keep your focus on the positive and affirm progress.
