ACADEMY NEWS
Fall Musical Birds of Paradise Plays Oct. 2-5 "Birds of Paradise" is a sweet story - both funny and poignant - with a terrific musical score by David Evans and Winnie Holzman. "Birds of Paradise" is the story of the Harbour Island Players, an amateur theater group whose lives are turned upside down when a professional actor, down on his luck, decides to direct and star in one of their productions. Showtimes are October 2-4 at 7:30 p.m. and October 5 at 2 p.m. You may also purchase tickets for $10 at the door. This musical is a black box production so seating is very limited. For information and reservations: 713-219-5515.

COUNSELORS' CORNER
PSAT TO BE GIVEN TO SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS On Wednesday, October 15, St. Agnes Academy will be administering the PSAT to all of our sophomores and juniors. The fee for this test has already been paid earlier this year. All sophomores and juniors will be dismissed following the administration. We anticipate this occurring around 11:30 am. Please arrange for your daughters to be picked up early that day. The PSAT results will come to us mid December and we will mail those results to you upon receipt. On PSAT day, the girls are to wear their regular uniforms. Each student should bring two #2 pencils, her calculator and a small snack with her to school on the 15th.
Catholic College Fair The Catholic College Fair will be held on Monday, October 13 at Strake Jesuit in the gyms. Over 275 colleges will be represented at this year's fair. We encourage our juniors and seniors to participate. The event begins at 7 pm and will conclude at 9 pm. Parking is at a premium, so we encourage carpooling whenever possible. For a complete listing of this year's participating colleges, please check the St. Agnes website under counseling, college night.
The Aftermath of the Hurricane It has now been a little more than two weeks since Hurricane Ike. For most of us life seems back to normal - power has been restored, refrigerators are stocked and our daily routine is back. All of us continue, however, to be in varying stages of the recovery process depending on how our lives were impacted by the storm. For our students, the feeling that they need to make up for lost time seems to be an added pressure at school. It is important to remember that even when life seems normal the affects of such a major event can linger. For many, the greatest effect may continue to be fatigue and distraction. A simple way to monitor yours and your daughter's response, and to help restore some semblance of normalcy, is "SAME C." We know that sleep, appetite, mood, energy and concentration can be off after an event of this magnitude occurs. Regulating the following basic daily routines can bring restoration and focus back: Sleep-getting regular sleep is a most for adolescents eight hours a night. Appetite-getting back to a balanced diet is recommended. Mood-ups and down in affect are expected. Encourage conversation. Energy-physical and emotional fatigue is typical. Rest, exercise can help re-energize. Concentration-Focus can clearly wane when our routines are out of kilter. Monitoring the above and active positive interventions can restore concentration. In addition, we have a list of resources (Hurricane Ike Recovery for Schools in the Parent Document area of Parent Corner on our Web site) for your reference in dealing with the aftermath of a hurricane.
