ADHD information for parents
Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, commonly known as ADHD, is a neurological condition which can manifest itself in a variety of symptoms. ADHD is subdivided into three types - Inattentive Type, Hyperactive/Impulsive Type, and Combined Type.  While there is no test for ADHD, it can be diagnosed based upon history of behavior and symptoms. Frequently, the female population is not diagnosed until much later than the male population because females more often have ADHD - Inattentive Type. It is not until the student encounters the more challenging requirements of navigating the system in high school, or even at times, college, that a proper diagnosis can be determined. Common symptoms of ADHD - Inattentive type can include being forgetful or easily distracted, losing items frequently, having poor organizational skills, making careless mistakes, appearing not to listen, and difficulty in following directions and sustaining attention. While there is no cure for ADHD, the symptoms of the disorder can be managed with behavioral therapy and/or medication. An important aspect of a student dealing with ADHD is understanding how the disorder affects her and how she can best deal with her symptoms. Learning compensatory strategies and being consistent with scheduling and planning are key to becoming the most successful student possible. For more information, please feel free to contact Lisa Crank in the Academic Services Center at lisa.crank@st-agnes.org.

The SAA Mothers' Club wishes you and yours all the blessings and joys of the Easter Season.
