IMPORTANT NEWS
SAA Parents: Please note that St. Agnes Academy is closed tomorrow, Friday, Sept. 12, so that members
of our community can prepare for the arrival of Hurricane Ike.
Continue to watch and listen to your local TV and radio news for information regarding potential school closures
next week. Please remember that St. Agnes follows the Houston Independent School District (HISD) policy
on school closings. If HISD schools are closed, St. Agnes will be closed, as well, unless you are notified otherwise.
We are preparing for possible power outages due to the coming storm. With that, our online services (OSP,
AcademyConnection and NetView, as well as e-mail functionality) will most likely be down for some time period.
We will do our best to get back online quickly.
Please note that ALL weekend activities are canceled, including the Choir Retreat, sports activities, and Princeton
Review. You will be notified about rescheduled events soon.
God bless you and please be safe in coming days.

COUNSELORS' CORNER
Mock PSAT Opportunity offered to the Class of 2010
Kaplan, Inc. will be offering our juniors an opportunity to take a mock PSAT on Saturday, September 27th.
The test will begin promptly at 10 am and finish around 1 pm. We will be using the St. Agnes Cafeteria for
the test. All interested juniors are asked to sign up in the counseling office if they plan to participate.
Students may sign up for the practice test beginning September 15 in the counseling office. Kaplan will have
a follow-up seminar on Wednesday, October 1st from 7- 8 pm in the cafeteria to go over the results. We are
asking all participating students to bring a $5 cash donation the day of the exam. This money will go to
the SAA Habitat for Humanity project. Students should bring two #2 pencils and a calculator with them to the exam.
We ask that our juniors taking Princeton Review at St. Agnes continue with their weekend preparation.
They should not sign up to take this mock PSAT as Princeton Review will not be able to re-schedule any makeup times
because of this event.
This is a reminder that the sophomore and junior students will take the PSAT on Wednesday, October 15, 2008
during the school day.
Progress notices
Progress notices will be available Tuesday, September 16th. The following week, you will have an opportunity
to meet with your child's teachers. Whether your student is a ninth grader or a senior each new
grade level presents its own challenges both academically and socially. Academic growth and social development
are important aspects of the adolescent stage of life and unique for each child. As children go through high
school they will discover their talents, abilities, and also their limitations. Successes and failures are feedback
and opportunities for growth and self-discovery. In going through this process, students need
guidance and support.
One scenario we often see in the guidance department is the frustration students experience as they make the
transition from their middle school's grading system to the grading system at St. Agnes. Many students enjoyed
"straight A's" in middle school and expect the same at St. Agnes. Often this is not the reality.
High school brings new challenges and responsibilities. The workload, expectations, and difficulty
of the material increase measurably. Grades the first quarter may not be what you or your child expected.
When anyone is going through a transition, adult or adolescent, they need time to adjust and make the accommodation
to the new situation. ENCOURAGE - SUPPORT & LISTEN!
As your child's counselor we are here to advocate for her and consult with you. Please call if we can
help.
