ACADEMY NEWS

MORNING AND AFTERNOON TRAFFIC FLOW HELPFUL HINTS
Please note the following helpful hints to ease congestion when dropping off or picking up your student:

  • Please pull as close to the administrative entrance as possible when dropping off your student.  Please do not stop in front of the science building as traffic quickly builds up behind you.
  • Please stay in the left lane to turn in front of the school. The right lane should be for students going to the back lot.
  • Please arrive no earlier than 3:15 p.m. to pick up your student. The school ends at 3:05 p.m. and most students need a few minutes to navigate our halls, go to their locker, and visit with friends before meeting you at the car. The pickup line is starting to back up to Bellaire Boulevard in the afternoon and the police officers will not allow this to happen.
  • Feel free to use the auditorium as a place to pick up your student in the afternoon. Use the right lane to pass the line of cars waiting to pick up students at the science building.  Park in a line in front of the auditorium leaving the right lane free for others to pass.

VISITOR PARKING HELPFUL HINTS:
Please note that all numbered parking spaces have been assigned to faculty, staff and students. We have 12 visitor parking spaces directly in front of the administrative entrance at the west side of campus. If these spots are filled please see the police office on duty for assistance. Please do not park in any numbered spot.

SPRING BREAK TRIP TO ARGENTINA
The foreign language department is sponsoring a 10-day trip to Argentina departing on March 13, 2009.  We will visit Buenos Aires, one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world with a wealth of history, culture and entertainment. This is a wonderful opportunity to see a "Fiesta Gaucha" in the pampas with traditional song, dance, gaucho's horsemanship and an asado lunch. You will visit the fabulous Iguazu Falls, enjoy a nature cruise on the Iguazu river, see Coatimundi, Tapirs and exotic birds, ride in a 4x4 truck, enjoy a zodiac raft trip on the upper Iguazu and a high-speed power boat on the gorge, see the falls from the catwalks high above, and finally take a train ride to the Devil's Throat. You will also visit historical Colonia del Sacramento after crossing the Rio de la Plata on a ferry boat. A tango lesson is par for the course. This trip is open to parents and students. The tour price is $3,111 and includes hotel accommodations, all airfare, most meals, professional bilingual guides, private motor coach for all transfers and sightseeing, entrance fees to museums and attractions as specified in the brochure, travel, accident and baggage insurance, as well as tips, taxes and gratuities. Please contact tour director Marie Moore for more information at mmoore@st-agnes.org or 713-219-5534.

Mothers' Club Bookfair: The Online Book Fair at Amazon.com is active!
Recognizing the many demands on the St. Agnes Academy community's time to attend events, the Mothers' Club moved the annual book fair, supporting the Isabel Cameron Library, online. From the convenience of home or office, supporters can now donate books to the Academy's library with the click of a mouse. Many items have been purchased for the library already this school year. Click on this link to go to the St. Agnes Wish List at Amazon.com. Look over the list of books, CDs and DVDs, then choose what you would like our library to have. With just a few clicks you're finished and Amazon ships directly to our library. It's that easy. If you can't go directly to the Web site using this link, please go to St. Agnes Web site, under Parent Corner, Mothers' Club, then Book Fair. Every donation further builds on the resources and strength of the Cameron Library. Thanks for participating! If you have any questions please contact Patsy Koetting at  Patsy.Koetting@hp.com or call 281-586-0625.

SAA Habitat for Humanity needs help to raise the roof!
Help the Habitat for Humanity Club "Raise the Roof" to build a house in the spring.  We are selling tickets for Macy's "Shop for a Cause" day for $5. The coupons are good on Saturday, September 20 and have less restrictions than usual.  It is good for all day.  When you are finished, you can drop the ticket into a box at any Macy's store to win a $500 shopping spree. All money raised from these tickets will go directly to the Habitat for Humanity Club. Please contact Katie Rose krose@st-agnes. or call 281-494-0493 to purchase one.  H4H appreciates your support!

SAA Gala Needlepoint Project
The SAA Gala Needlepoint Project needs YOU!!  We are currently looking for both stitchers and underwriters.  This year's project will be fairly simple, and consisting of several small items rather than large pieces.  A perfect project for either the beginner or advanced needlepointer.  All the parents received our letters last week asking for donations to the Auction.  What better way to support your daughter's school than by creating a work of art.  If you don't needlepoint, but are looking for a way to support the auction, we need underwriters for our canvas, threads, and finishing.  Anyone interested in either stitching or underwriting, please contact Mary Overbeck at 281-980-9308 or by email, tmmjover@comcast.net.

FROM THE COUNSELORS

To The Parents of the Class of 2009:
We began meeting with the seniors on Tuesday, Sept. 2.  They are encouraged to stop by their counselor's office and sign up for an individual appointment. This is an exciting time for our students and it is apparent that many of them have done their research and are ready to go with the process. We ask that you aid us in making this application season a good one for your daughters. Here are just a few tips.

1) If your daughter has an early deadline of Nov. 1 or 15, we would like to see her in the next couple of weeks. Gently ask her if she has made an appointment.

2) Review your daughter's choices with her. Nothing is more disappointing for all if we, the counselors, have to tell her that a school is beyond her reach. Good research will prevent these kinds of conversations. Most schools list their requirements on their websites and your daughters all have a Naviance account.

3) Review essays for your daughters. Please be available as another set of eyes to look for grammatical and technical errors.

4) Encourage your daughter to apply online. Colleges prefer to receive applications electronically and the chances of something being lost in the process are minimal.

We look forward to working with you and your daughters.  We hope that you have marked next Tuesday, Sept. 9 in your calendar for Senior Parent Information Night. The meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. in the Strake Family Cafeteria at St. Agnes Academy.  Please note that this is a new start time for our parent nights! We hope that you are able to come for this informative meeting!

New college resource available to students
We are pleased to introduce our first edition of "College Connection" - a newsletter aimed at answering questions related to the college admissions process.  While much of the content is directed at junior and senior parents whose daughters are exploring and applying, respectively, to colleges we encourage parents (and daughters) of students in every grade level to read through "College Connection." The more informed you become, the less anxious your family will feel when it's time for your daughter to apply to college.  Please click here for access.
