Placement 2023

List of 1 items.

  • Placement 2023

Course placement will come out at the end of May/early June.

Placement testing will take place on campus on Saturday, April 22, 2023.

Please click here for more details about testing details.

Our goal with the placement process is to facilitate a smooth transition to high school for your daughters. We want our students to be challenged, but not overwhelmed. The placement exams, along with the ISEE results, give us common points of comparison between students coming to us from all over the greater Houston area. Typically, students who earned 8 and 9 stanines on the ISEE exam can expect an offer of placement into one or more honors classes at St. Agnes. Strong performance on placement exams is especially critical for students with stanines of 7 and below who wish to place into honors classes. Students who do not place into honors classes in the 9
th grade can demonstrate their readiness for additional rigor in the curriculum by excelling (maintaining a strong A) in a college prep level course and expressing an interest in the subject.

About two-thirds of our students take college prep Algebra 1 or honors Algebra 1 in the 9th grade. It is essential for students to establish a strong foundation in algebra because all future work in mathematics will build upon this foundation. The other third of students take either college prep Geometry or Honors Geometry in the 9th grade. The algebra placement exam assesses specific algebra skills in addition to mathematical problem-solving skills. The mathematics department uses ISEE scores and the results of the placement exam to determine the best math course for each student. If you have questions regarding your daughter’s math placement, please contact Natalee Lloyd, math department chair, at natalee.lloyd@st-agnes.org

The world language placement exam assesses students’ knowledge of grammar elements, vocabulary, and writing skills. The world language department uses the results of the placement exam to place students into Level 1, 2, or 3 for each language offered. If you have questions regarding your daughter’s world language placement, please contact Marcia Clark, world language department chair, at marcia.clark@st-agnes.org.

All 9th graders take either college prep Biology or Honors Biology. The science placement exam assesses mastery of concepts from physical science (also known as Integrated Physics and Chemistry), life science, and basic science skills, such as measuring and interpreting graphs. ISEE scores are also considered during the science placement process, as good reading comprehension, an aptitude for learning vocabulary, and strong quantitative skills are important for success in Honors Biology. If you have questions regarding your daughter’s science placement, please contact Robin Licato, science department chair, at robin.licato@st-agnes.org

There is no placement exam for English. All 9
th graders take either college prep English 1 or Honors English 1. Placement in Honors English 1 is based primarily on ISEE exam scores and may involve review of the writing sample and other application materials. In recent years, about 20% of 9th graders were offered placement in Honors English 1. If you have questions regarding your daughter’s English placement, please contact Lydia Smith, English department chair, at lydia.smith@st-agnes.org.

You may contact Brigid Schiro, Director of Enrollment Management, at brigid.schiro@st-agnes.org to decline an honors placement, or to notify us of any errors in the course requests. Student schedules are generated in June, so it is important that we have the correct course requests by June 2, 2023.

The faculty, staff, and administrators at St. Agnes are all looking forward to working with your daughters over the next four years. Let the journey begin!
