Verses, Prayers, or Invocations of Saints... There's No Wrong Way to Pray!

A Prayer to Start Your Day - The Dominican Blessing

May the Creator bless us.
May the Redeemer heal us.
May the Holy Spirit enlighten us
and give us eyes to see,
ears to hear,
and hands to do the work of God,
feet to walk the path of justice,
and mouths to preach the good news.
May the angel of peace watch over us and lead us at last to the reign of God. Amen.

A Prayer for Class - from Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers

Day by day we bless you, Lord.
We praise your name forever.
Jesus, gentle and humble of heart, have mercy on us.
Mary, mirror of justice, pray for us.
Joseph, model of workers, pray for us.
May we know the shortness of our days, that we may learn wisdom.
Amen.

A Prayer for Tests - to St. Joseph of Cupertino, Patron of Students and Test Takers

O humble St. Joseph of Cupertino, singularly favored by God, in overcoming the difficulties of study and the worries of examinations, implore the Holy Spirit to enlighten my mind and strengthen memory in the search of His truth and wisdom. Help me, especially in the decisive moments of this examination, protecting me from that forgetfulness and disturbing anxiety which often affect me. May I succeed in offering God my finest work and may I grow in knowledge, understanding, humility and charity. May everything that I attempt to learn in life be offered in faithful service to God, from whom flows that wisdom which leads to eternal life. Amen.

A Prayer for Nerves - The Prayer of St. Teresa of Avila

Let nothing disturb you,
Let nothing frighten you,
All things are passing: God never changes.
Patience obtains all things.
Whoever has God lacks nothing; God alone suffices.

A Prayer for Friendship - Adapted from To Light Their Way

O God of community, we aren't meant to do life alone. May my friendships build bridges, and may I dance across divides to the tune of a new friend. May my relationships broaden my world and help me grow in empathy and understanding, too. Guard me against creating cliques, and give me a spirit of kindness to sow grace where there is misunderstanding and hope where there is hurt. Thank you, O God, for the gift of friendship. Amen.

A Breath Prayer for When you Need Direction - from To Light Their Way

Inhale: Guide me, O God.
Exhale: My hope is in you.

A Breath Prayer for Restless Thoughts - from To Light Their Way

Inhale: You are tender and merciful.
Exhale: Guide me to the path of peace.

A Verse to Walk Towards Peace - Luke 1: 78-79

"Because of the tender mercy of our God, with which the Sunrise from on high will visit us, to shine upon those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace."

A Breath Prayer for A Regular Day - from To Light Their Way

Inhale: Have mercy on me.
Exhale: Hear my prayer.

There Are Many Different Ways to Pray

Prayer is an essential part of education in a Dominican Catholic school. St. Dominic was known to pray in nine different ways, both through his body and mind.

St. Agnes students are encouraged to draw their minds toward their faith, incorporate prayer for class and other important issues into their daily lives, and assume the responsibility to act on behalf of social justice in light of the Gospel.
