St Agnes Academy Co-Ed Interp Camp

Learn how to express yourself through interpreting literature. Explore a chosen narrative and characters, practice taking an audience to the next level, learn how to do more than tell the story - you will become the story.

Work in a fun collaborative format while you experiment with blocking a scene, transitioning between events and assigning nuance and pathos to characters both similar to and wildly different from your own personality. Brush up on effective speaking skills and be ready to compete in Dramatic or Humorous Interp or Duo Acting as soon as the speech season begins. Taught by coaches with real-life experience in theater and speech and who have taken competitors all the way to Nationals. Hear from award-winning interp captains and duo actors about how they have juggled high school demands with successful speech careers at SAA. Also invited to speak and perform is nationally-known storyteller Rabbi Dan Gordon.

No shorts or flip-flops, please. Snacks provided. Camp will be held in SAA’s choral room.

Meet your instructors:
Sherri Perry, SAA Head Coach, Speech & Debate; Communications Chair. Ms. Perry joined SAA two years ago and has taken five competitors to Nationals in that time in Dramatic Interpretation, Duo Acting and Program Oral Interpretation. Her prior experience in education encompasses fifth through twelfth grades in both public and parochial schools with nineteen years of experience teaching literature, twelve years coaching speech, seven years as a theater director and four years coaching debate. She has also been a Dean of Students and is a published author. She believes the power of telling a story transcends all cultures and conflicts.

Sharon Gehbauer has been a St. Agnes teacher for sixteen years. While currently an English teacher, her background is in theatre arts, having taught drama, speech and debate in the first half of her career. Her professional experience includes as a cast member at Chocolate Bayou Theater and stage manager at Main Street Theater. Speech and debate were instrumental in her academic and artistic development while attending St. Agnes in the late 1980s. She believes there is nothing more powerful than developing one’s inner strength and confidence to speak publicly, especially for young women in a world that needs more female leaders. This year she joins SAA’s forensic team as Assistant Interp Coach.

Matthew Garrett began his career as a theology teacher and drama coach at the late great Mt. Carmel High and later went on to St. Joseph High in Victoria before coming to SAA ten years ago. His zeal for theatre began at a young age when he and his sister helped with their parish’s church musicals and he continued to act throughout high school. Last year he was the Assistant Interp Coach at SAA and he will continue in that role this year along with teaching theology. He has also participated in the Comedy Sportz event for students and staff. He looks forward to helping students develop a passion for the performance arts.
