At the first competition of the season, Spectrum 3847 achieved an impressive silver medal as a finalist at the FIRST In Texas Space City #1 event, held March 7-9, at Clear Springs High School in League City, TX. Reaching the finals highlighted the team's strong performance and collaborative spirit throughout the tournament.
In the playoffs, Spectrum 3847 was selected as the first pick of Alliance 2, joining forces with captain ITKAN Girls 10340, Energy NERDs 6243, and Bluetonium 127. This alliance advanced all the way to the finals before falling to the top-seeded Alliance 1, consisting of ITKAN Robotics 9128, Valor 6800, and Glow With The Flow 8370.
In addition, Spectrum 3847 was honored with the Quality Award, recognizing the team's excellence in machine robustness in concept and fabrication.
In the individual category, two students were recognized as FIRST Leadership Award Semi-finalists: Aisha Londo-Salmen and Matthew Nguyen. The FIRST Leadership Award celebrates the dedication and individual contributions of those who excel in areas such as leadership, entrepreneurship, and advancing the mission of FIRST within their communities.
Reflecting on the event, Head Coach Allen Gregory IV shared a positive outlook: "This is the first competition of the season, and the team learned a lot with our robot Infrared. We will go through the engineering process and make iterations to make this robot ready for our next competition. Engineering is an evolving process, and these students are truly exceptional, demonstrating remarkable ingenuity, resilience, and passion for innovation."
Coach Gregory's words capture the essence of continuous improvement in robotics, where each competition serves as a vital learning opportunity to refine designs, troubleshoot issues, and enhance performance through iterative engineering. This approach not only strengthens Spectrum 3847's robot, Infrared, but also embodies FIRST's core value of Gracious Professionalism®—a philosophy coined by Dr. Woodie Flowers that promotes high-quality work while emphasizing respect for others, empathy, and community collaboration. By openly
documenting their experiences, challenges, and solutions in their build blog on
spectrum3847.org, the team shares valuable insights with the broader FIRST community, enabling other teams to draw inspiration, adopt best practices, and elevate their own robots—fostering mutual growth and the spirit of gracious competition.
Next, Spectrum 3847 will compete at the FIRST In Texas Space City #2 event, held April 2-4, 2026, at Clear Brook High School in Friendswood, as they continue their pursuit of ranking points to qualify for the FIRST In Texas District Championships at NRG Arena in Houston, April 15-18, 2026.
